overcoming limiting beliefs

I just listened to a really powerful podcast by James Wedmore that really resonated with me.  He described things so clearly about beliefs.  Do you know what limiting beliefs are getting you stuck?  He describes 5 types of beliefs that you need to work on to change your life.  As I listened to him speak on these, I could think of a hundred ways my beliefs have held me back.

The first one he speaks of is beliefs about beliefs.  Are you even aware that everything is a belief?  You operate solely from your own personal belief system whether it’s conscious or not.  Your experiences throughout your whole life shape how you think and act.  Your beliefs are not right or wrong but will limit your life if you only operate from one perspective.  Your brain doesn’t match your beliefs to fit your life, your brain matches your life to fit your beliefs.  Have you heard the saying, “what you think about, you bring about”?  If you want change your beliefs, you have to shift your mind to believe something different, which is the second type of belief, beliefs about what is possible.

What do you really want and desire in your life?  Do you believe it is possible?  If the answer isn’t yes, 100%, then there is a limiting belief there around possibility.  Remember, the brain matches your life to fit your beliefs.  If you don’t think it’s a possibility, then you won’t receive it.  This is where I have struggled for years and years.  I didn’t believe I would make money, find love, or find a career I was passionate about.  I felt hopeless and didn’t believe those things were possible, so I never received it.  Be aware of how often negative thoughts and words come out of your head.

This is where I got real about the beliefs about myself.  I told myself lots of stories. “Men I like, don’t like me back.  I just need to lose weight.  I just want to pay the bills. I can’t start my own business.  I shouldn’t share how I feel because it makes other people feel bad.”  These are all negative beliefs that I repeated to myself and others for years.   I finally hit my breaking point because I really didn’t believe all these things about myself.  This was not the way I wanted to live my life.   I just didn’t know any other story.  Remember, the brain matches your life to fit your beliefs.  Those thought patterns kept me having the same experiences in life.  Get off the hamster wheel!!   You are not that person.

After I did A LOT of work on myself, (and I mean YEARS of work) I found some new beliefs to struggle with.  I was feeling strong and powerful!  I created multiple businesses that I could really excel and have huge success at, but they were not creating the income I imagined.  This is where the beliefs about what it’s going to take and who I have to become.  What if I fail?  I really need to work on things and make them perfect and make lots of money so no one thinks I’m a failure.  I read a ton of books, listened to a lot of podcasts, took multiple courses, hired coaches, and planned for every possible outcome.  What I wasn’t doing was actually putting myself out there and taking imperfect action.  If you do nothing, you get nothing.  If it doesn’t work, oh well, you try something else.  Don’t worry about what it’s going to take.  Every little baby step is a success.  So what if you do something that doesn’t work, you failed, at that one little thing.  You’ve got what it takes.  I had to accept that I am a failure sometimes. And there is always a lesson in the failure that makes you stronger, smarter, and better next time.

The last type of belief that James spoke about is where I’m at now.  Beliefs about what is going to happen.  Our brains love predictability and we tend to get stuck in the “what if” and “if this, then” ego tricks.  The future hasn’t happened yet and we cannot predict it.   We need to stop living trying to control everything and always thinking of the worst case scenario.  It keeps us paralyzed and not moving forward.  You can make all the predictions you want but they aren’t true.  Stop making crazy predictions about your life or how you think other people will think, feel or act.  You will never please everyone and really the only person that matters is YOU!!! This is YOUR life!

I am working hard to keep the limiting beliefs at bay.  I am choosing my thoughts and actions every minute of every day.  I try to stay focused on the present and what I can do right now to get me closer to the life of my dreams.  I celebrate the baby steps of success.  I celebrate the lessons learned from taking action.  I celebrate doing things that I love and bring me joy.  I love my life.

I am truly grateful for my life and everyone and everything in it. I am learning lessons and growing more every day. I am the creator of my life, not the victim.  I created Solo with Soul to share my stories, struggles, and successes so that you don’t feel alone.  Become more aware of your thought and feelings so that you can discover where you are getting stuck. I created the Discover Your Soul daily awareness journal to encourage you to incorporate a daily awareness practice into your day.  And as the saying goes, “It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it.”
